And they shall know no fear

Wow. Haven´t updated this poor blog since mid-april. I guess time flies when your work consists of drawing pterodactyls...

But - nothing to shake one out of ones hobby slump like the arrival of GW´s first official true scale marines!

As far as I'm concerned the sculptors utterly nailed the stature and proportions of these guys - they´re exactly as big as I've always felt an astartes should be. The primaris are simply great models (if a bit too "techy" for my taste). The contrived background for them is another story, but that´s been discussed to death elsewhere. I´m just gonna ignore it and view these as regular properly dimensioned marines.

So without further ado here´s my first take on the new and improved defenders of humanity. It's built straight out of the box, apart from the helmet which I swapped for a Mk IV (my favourite mark).

The iconography and paint scheme was inspired in part by the bearded true scale Questing Grey Knight I did a few years ago. https://convertorum.blogspot.se/2013/10/good-knight-part-iii.html

Not sure about what I should call the chapter, but leaning towards "Metatron something, something" (Metatron as we all know being the biblical archangel acting as The Voice of God). Either Knights of Metatron or Sons of Metatron - or simply the Metatron chapter. Something along those lines at least.

  1. Beautiful! Keep it simple. The Metatron sounds good to me.

    1. Cheers! Yeah - Metatron plain and simple does work rather well.

  2. I love it! Nice to see you've kept your painting skills in the absence ;)
Have you got any plans for the other primaris kits?

    1. Glad you dig! I'm taking it one mini at a time as usual. Aiming for a five man squad of these guys and then we'll see how it goes. I am rather curious about the reivers though...

    2. I'll be watching out! The reivers are great looking models, but I just can't get over their weird legs. It'll be great to see what you can do with them.

    3. They took a little getting used to but now I´m completely sold. They have Jes Goodwin all over them - like a cross between space marines and vindicare assassins..

  3. Oracles of Metatron? Angels of Metator (Latin for one who metes out)

    1. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards just Metatron (chapter) though.

  4. It is beautiful, now I'd like to paint some of them! How about Feathers of Metatron? Maybe too much poetic but out of the box I think.

  6. Good to see new things from you. I'm not a fan of the "techs" look of the new marines either, but your painting is the perfect antidote.

They'll probably release a few riffs of this armour, so we probably don't have to wait to long for a more archaic looking versions.

  7. Wait wait wait...this is "The convertorum", where is the conversion?! XD
    Nice paintjob and weathering

  8. Super!
I just finished my share of primaris and i am equally satisfied with the proportions. Great fun to convert as well. Looking forward very much to the multi-part kit as well.

    1. Indeed. I´m too lazy to convert the one pose ones...

  9. HE'S ALIVE! You had me worried, you know... ;)

Seriously, Johan, so great to see you back -- and with such a lovely paintjob to boot.

I think the grittiness of your paintjob actually goes a long way towards making the armour look slightly less high-tech and more realistically grimdark.

Really looking forward to seeing whatever it is you do with the Reivers. From a fluff perspective, they are possibly even more horrible and difficult to accept than the regular Primaris Marines, at least for me, bit if you completely ignore the fluff, the models are rather lovely indeed.

Very much looking forward to your next update, mate! :)

    1. Thanks Krauty! Feels good to be back!

I used a sponge technique on these inspired by one of Jakobs truescale marines. His was pink/purplish but the principles the same. Just dab a bit of dark grey and off white on the mini and wash with brown ink - works really well to build up texture.

I haven't read anything too irksome about the reivers. They're like scout assassins from what I've understood? Sounds pretty alrightl to me - would love to hear you expand a bit on what's bothering you about their background? Gotta admit I´m really starting to dig the models...

    2. Again, the models are excellent! Except maybe for the firing grapnel gun, which seems just a tad too G.I.Joe for my taste ;)

I guess my main gripe with them is that the somewhat awkwardly seem to replace/one-up the Scouts. I realise that Scouts are Space Marines in training, yeah, but they also always seemed a bit like the Adeptus Astartes' BlackOps/stealth department to me.

Plus the whole terror tactics/assassin angle seems ever so slightly weird to me -- remember, Space Marines do not actually wear camouflage because it's cowardly and not knightly enough, and now they employ terror tactics and assassins? Doesn't exactly seem in character.

And finally, there's just something patently ridiculous about the thought of even bigger (!) Space Marines *sneaking* around...

    3. Hm. I see. Interesting point.

Well, they are called "The angels of death" for a reason. Astartes aren't very nice people and I think the reivers tap into their darker more ruthless aspects. For me a unit of seasoned infiltrating black ops warriors actually make a lot sense - much more so than the general primaris background at any rate.

    4. Oh no, they are definitely not nice people. But I always understood their established background as having this warrior-monk thing going on, where they are perfectly okay with killing entire populations, yet sniff disdainfully at stuff like wearing camouflage or using subterfuge -- after all, wasn't the Alpha Legion ostracised by its fellow legions even before the Heresy due to resorting to tactics unbecoming of an Astartes like that?

But when all is said and done, It think it ultimately depends on how willing you are to accept the tweaked/retconned fluff -- or, indeed, ignore it altogether. Again, the models themselves are excellent.

    5. That they certainly are!!

  10. Awesome work Johan!

Any chance you could give some idea how you got that great armor color?

Looks perfect for what I want to use on my Space Wolves. I've always disliked the bright blue-grey the studio uses.

They're sprayed black and then a zenithal spray of standard grey. The I sponge them with dark dark grey and off white and give them a wash of earthshade. After that they're drybrushed with standard grey followed by a drybrush of light grey (standard grey plus white) and then I do highlights with the same light grey colour. After that I give some parts a sepia wash where appropriate to add some nuances.

    2. Excellent! Thanks for taking the time to put that down for me.

    3. Hey dude! I totally love your Marines here. I am intrigued to try out the sponging technique, but i fear, i did not quite understand how you do it. I know the sponging to get paint chips, where you sponge f.e. brown and metallics on the edges of a miniature. But the sponging you used here seems different. Would you like to explain that a bit more in detail?

Also i tripped over the off-white. I guess this is some dirty white like "Pallid Wych Flesh", but wouldnt that turn the miniature way too bright? Or, after the wash, brown?

I would love to hear a bit more about that, if you find the time. Either way, thank you for sharing your beautiful work! I am looking forward to more posts =)

I'll be picking up the First Strike set so I can have exactly this - proper job true scale marines.

  12. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
